Prevention Network was created over 25 years ago by a group of leaders in the substance abuse prevention field.  This was done in response to a need to support and assist Michigan's grassroots organizations who were committed to preventing underage alcohol use, youthful tobacco use, and other substance abuse.

Originally called Prevention Network of Volunteers, or PNV, we have provided leadership, training, grant assistance, and clarity to over 1000 volunteer groups, spent time on the phone with over 10,000 individuals, and travelled over 750,000 miles visiting the homes, offices, schools, coffee shops and places of worship across Michigan.

Through our ever evolving grant program, we have provided over 5,000 grants and contracts using funding from Michigan’s single-state agency for substance abuse prevention, Michigan’s Office of Highway Safety Planning, the federal Department of Education, and the Skillman Foundation.

PN has convened state-wide groups, coalitions, and steering committees to promote asset building, prevent underage drinking, substance abuse at institutions of higher education, distracted driving,  and youthful tobacco use, and to promote parenting support and resources.

PN is made up of a eight professional paid staff, one part time volunteer program coordinator, one full time consultant in the City of Detroit, an ever-changing board of trustees, and hundreds of committed volunteers throughout Michigan.

In addition to our work in Michigan, PN is recognized throughout the nation as a leader in supporting and empowering grassroots volunteers, our support healthy alcohol policies, and our insistence that substance abuse be seen as a public health issue.
